思想起 (Sīxiǎngqǐ), or ‘Thinking of…’ is one of five main folk songs from a repertoire of folk music from the southern Taiwanese peninsula of Hengchun. This repertoire of folk music is united by the idea of nostalgia, reflection and a longing for home. These folk songs are thought to have been developed in the late Qing Dynasty when Han Chinese immigrated to Southern Taiwan from the Chinese mainland, creating these songs to express a longing for their homeland. The melody Sīxiǎngqǐ is intensely expressive, with large melodic leaps and long drawn out notes. While there is a standardized version of the folk melody, local singing styles vary the melody into very different versions, which makes it an ideal platform for improvisation.
